Daphne Jackson was the UK’s first female Professor of physics and a lifelong campaigner for encouraging women in science to return to their careers after a break.

Following her sad death in 1991, the Daphne Jackson Trust was established in her memory and continues her inspired work to this day. Following the model, established by Professor Jackson, we have now helped over 300 scientists and engineers return to their careers.

Providing support and flexible retraining opportunities to men and women

Science affects everyone and is at the heart of the world we live in. As the only charity in the UK dedicated to realising the potential of all scientists and engineers to return to research following a career break, we believe our unique programme of fellowships are crucial in supporting men and women with the skills and confidence to return back to research.

Many people still struggle needlessly to return to a STEM research after a career break

For many scientists, engineers or researchers, life happens: they have a family, relocate, need to care for a loved one or are ill. This should not mean that they should struggle to re-enter their chosen career.

Women are also still massively underrepresented in the STEM industries – maintaining an equal, diverse and talented workforce matters now and for the future. We believe more needs to be done to improve the working practices as many people are still struggling unnecessarily to return to their STEM career.

Our future plans

As the Daphne Jackson Trust enters its third decade, the importance of our Fellowship programmes is becoming ever more evident, and with increasing support from our sponsors and host organisations, the number of returners the Daphne Jackson Trust helps continues to grow.

However we want to reach and fund even more fellowships in the next thirty years. Can you help us by donating £15 a year to Daphne Jackson Trust?

Celebrate with us!
