Stimulating Medical Research in Scotland: Daphne Jackson Fellowships with Medical Research Scotland

20 September 2024 | News news

Daphne Jackson Fellowships are a crucial avenue for researchers who want to return to their careers after a break taken for family, caring, or health reasons.  Yet our Fellowships are dependent on funding partners like Medical Research Scotland, who believe that time out of the research workforce shouldn’t mean the end of a career.

“Medical Research Scotland is delighted to have played a major role, over the last 10 years, in supporting Daphne Jackson Trust Fellows undertaking their Fellowships in Scotland.

“Through the Medical Research Scotland-sponsored Daphne Jackson Fellowships, we have been able to support high caliber researchers at the early stages of their research careers who might not have been eligible for funding through the more typical research funding streams.”

Dr Jenny van Bekkum

The five current Daphne Jackson-MRS Fellows include Dr Jenny van Bekkum, who is investigating the impact of urban rewilding on public and social health after a nine-year career break.

Fellowships transform not only Fellows’ careers, but also the research landscape more broadly.  Former Fellows can now be found in research institutions across Scotland.  According to the MRS:

“As well as promoting medical research in Scotland, the success of the Fellows we have funded in obtaining positions in academia or the biomedical industry sector after completing their Fellowships is evidence that we and the Daphne Jackson Trust are helping strengthen and grow Scotland’s workforce of excellent medical researchers.

“We look forward to continuing our positive relationship with the Daphne Jackson Trust to forward our shared missions, while helping returners to research re-establish their careers in the medical research field.”

Medical Research Scotland is now looking for two new Daphne Jackson Fellows.  Find out more about the chance to return to medical research in Scotland here.
