Research Technical Professional Fellowships

Our Research Technical Professional Fellowships are aimed at those who have worked in, or are looking to move into, technical research roles. Research technical professionals include anyone with specialised skills and knowledge in any area of research, STEM, humanities, arts and more.

  • These fellowships are open to technical specialists who have had a career break and wish to return to research in a technical capacity, and to other professionals who have had a career break and are looking to move into a technical role in research. If that’s you, you’re in the right place!
  • You don’t always need a PhD or BSc for these fellowships. You could have a professional or technical qualification instead (e.g. C.Tech., C.Eng. or B Tech.).
  • They don’t focus on a specific research question. Instead, RTP Fellows may be retrained in a variety of specialist skills or provided with more focused technical or analytical training hosted in a particular department or institute.
  • The emphasis of these fellowships is on retraining and reskilling in specific advanced research, scientific, engineering and/or creative techniques.
  • They are open to all research settings including, academia, research institutes, industry, and more.
  • By the end of the fellowship, you’ll be reskilled with relevant recent experience, overcoming barriers your career break might have created. Your skills and techniques could be useful across a wide range of roles.

Research Technical Professional Fellowships could be in any research area dependent upon available funding.

You must have had a career break for two years or more, taken for family, caring or health reasons.

Fellowships are usually up to two years in length at 0.5FTE, although there may be flexibility depending on your needs.

You’ll have all the benefits of being a Daphne Jackson Fellow, with a dedicated Fellowship Advisor to guide and support you throughout the process. You’ll also have access to Daphne Jackson Trust training courses, building your networks with other Fellows.

Research Technical Professionals are vital in all areas of research. They provide in-depth specialist knowledge and skills, have a unique practical understanding of techniques and methodologies, and provide expert maintenance of highly specialised equipment and facilities.

Without them, most research would not happen at all. We’re supporting this community as we think that everyone working in research, in whatever capacity, should have the same opportunity to return to their career after a break.
