Dr Yulia Dean

Daphne Jackson Fellow at Durham University, Department of Chemistry

Name: Dr Yulia Dean
Field: Physical Sciences

Specialisms:

  • Polymer chemistry
  • Biodegradability and biopolymers

Research and qualifications:

  • BSc and MSc from M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State Academy of Fine Chemical Technology.
  • PhD in Polymer Chemistry from A.V. Topchiev Institute of Petrochemical Synthesis, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russia.
  • Postdoctoral researcher at Cardiff University and University of Durham, before moving into industry.

Returning to research after a 2-year break, Yulia’s Fellowship is entitled: “Utilisation of RAFT and ROMP as Crafting Tools in Synthesis of Bioresponsive Cartilage Proteoglycan Mimics”. RAFT and ROMP are advanced polymerization techniques used to create synthetic materials that mimic the properties of natural cartilage proteins. They could have important medical applications such as cartilage repair and replacement.
