Research Fellowships

Research Fellowships are for researchers who have had a career break of two or more years for family, caring or health reasons, and now want to return to their research career. They combine an individually tailored research project with mentoring and training.

If you think you meet our eligibility criteria, get in touch to start your journey returning to your career.

Our Regular Research Fellowship is open to researchers in all subject areas, and you can apply any time if you have a potential Host organisation or research area in mind.

We’ll do an eligibility assessment with you, and if successful, you’ll confirm the arrangements with the host organisation and supervisors that you’ve chosen. We’ll guide you through this and work with you to develop your research proposal, while trying to source funding for your fellowship.

The regular route is a good option if there are no advertised opportunities that match your expertise or geographical area. You can apply at any time, but we cannot guarantee we will secure funding – without this in place, your Fellowship cannot proceed.

If we have secured funding for a fellowship, you can apply through the funded fellowship route. We’ll advertise the opportunity and tell you what information you need to send us. Check out what Funded Research Fellowship opportunities are currently open for applications!

The funded route tends to be in a specific subject related to the funder’s remit – you’ll need to check this carefully to ensure it matches your expertise. After we receive your initial paperwork, we’ll undertake an eligibility assessment with you. If successful, you’ll be asked to submit further information.

The funder is often involved in selecting the final candidate – either through a face-to-face interview or assessment of the application paperwork. Once a selection has been made, we’ll then work with you on creating a research proposal.

The advantage of the funded route is that the funding is already in place. If you are selected by the funder, your chance of being awarded a fellowship is high. This makes them very popular! The process is competitive and often, we have several talented candidates applying for each opportunity. Where possible, strong candidates who aren’t successful may be able to convert to the regular route.
