As we look to 2026, the Daphne Jackson Trust’s purpose remains firmly the same…
To support research returners and, in doing so, to strengthen the UK research ecosystem through equity.
We exist to ensure that career breaks, which affect under-represented groups, do not result in the permanent loss of research talent. By creating inclusive, flexible routes back into research, we help protect past investment in individuals and build a more resilient, diverse research workforce.
How do we deliver this impact?
- We maintain a talented research workforce by offering flexible, part-time fellowships across all research disciplines and technical abilities. Enabling researchers with caring responsibilities and health conditions to return and thrive.
- We develop strategic partnerships with funders, universities, government, charities, learned societies and industry to extend our reach and impact, and showcase best practice across the research sector.
- We champion equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace and highlight the barriers faced by returners and work to improve research culture for the long term.
- We support our Fellows through tailored mentorship during their Fellowships and create strong peer and stakeholder networks that support their ongoing professional development and career progression.
- We work to shape the policy landscape, advocating for more supportive and inclusive working environments for research returners and maintain the Trust’s role as a recognised expert in this field.
Career breaks don’t end potential. Our mission is to make sure they don’t end research careers either.
“Career breaks don’t end potential, but without the right support they can end a research career. Our mission is to ensure talented researchers aren’t left behind, but supported to return and make lasting impact.”
Dr Katie Perry, Chief Executive at The Daphne Jackson Trust
We can’t do this alone. To continue to widen access to research careers and protecting diversity within the research pipeline, we rely on the continued partnership and support of our funders.
Together, we can ensure that talent is not lost, but retained and returned to strengthen the future of research. Â
