Medical research fellowships

Author:

This autumn, we are delighted to feature medical research fellowships from some of our long-standing supporters, including the Alzheimer’s Society, British Heart Foundation, MS Society, and Orthopaedic Research UK.

Together these funders currently support seven fellows across six institutions in the UK.

These include fellows like Dr Jocelyn Auger, a British Heart Foundation funded fellow who returned to cardiovascular research after a fourteen-year break.  Her project, “Establishing a microfluidic model of thrombus and endothelial cell interaction under flow as a tool for application of novel imaging techniques,” is hosted by the University of Birmingham.

Another fellow, Dr Annika Burleigh, is funded by the Orthopaedic Society and hosted by the Royal Veterinary College.  Annika first took a career break to care for her premature son, a break that was extended following her diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis.  Her research project, “Defining the mechanism and efficacy of CDK8/19 therapies across the skeleton in pre-clinical osteoarthritis (OA) models,” explores a breakthrough drug to reverse psteoarthritis (OA) and restore joint health.

Support from funding organsations enables the Daphne Jackson Trust to offer part-time, flexible fellowships, allowing our fellows to return to research while maintaining work-life balance.

These fellowships highlight the powerful impact of partnership, combining the Trust’s expertise in supporting returners with the vision of medical research funders to drive innovation, diversity, and discovery in UK research.

Do you or someone you know want to return to research?
