Macular disease is the leading cause of sight loss in the UK and other developed countries, affecting people of all ages. In the UK alone, nearly 1.5 million people are living with macular disease, with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) being the most common type.
The Macular Society supports research that aims to improve both the treatment options and quality of life for those affected by macular disease. Their research covers a wide range of topics, including diagnostic advancements, gene therapy, and lifestyle treatments.
Dr. Louise Terry is a Macular Society funded Daphne Jackson Fellow at the University of Cardiff, where she completed her PhD and worked as a lecturer before her career break. Louise is investigating how “densitometry” equipment can be used to assess visual pigments. By comparing the results from densitometry with traditional eye imaging techniques, she hopes to discover the equipment’s usefulness as a screening tool for macular disease.
“The Macular Society is delighted to be sponsoring a Daphne Jackson Trust fellowship for the first time and worked closely with the team to develop and advertise the opportunity. It was also good to have the chance to meet Louise in person during the application process. We are keen to support liaison between people with macular disease and Louise during the fellowship.”
