We’ve reached an important milestone at the Daphne Jackson Trust, awarding our 500th Daphne Jackson Fellowship!
In 1985, Professor Daphne Jackson – the first female Professor of Physics in the UK – devised a fellowship scheme to help women who had taken a career break return to the research workforce. Daphne’s programme combined research and retraining, providing women with the skills they needed to restart their research careers.
“Qualified women who are unemployed or under-employed following a career break for family commitments represent an appalling waste of talent and of investment in their initial education. Many such women are eager to return to their original careers or to a new field of activity for which their initial education is relevant, provided that retraining can be given and that they can, at least initially, work on a part-time basis.”
– Professor Daphne Jackson
In the almost fifty years since the first fellowship, the Daphne Jackson Trust has expanded to include all people and research remits. We are thrilled that we have helped 500 people return research over the last five decades.
Our former fellows can be found across the UK, not only leading the way on research as academics and industry leaders, but also advocating for flexible working policies and the importance of work-life balance in research.

We couldn’t have done this without the support of people and organisations across the UK and Ireland. From the funders who provide much-needed salaries to the hosts who offer lab space and the many supervisors who guide our fellows through their return, our supporters truly make these fellowships possible.
As we look to the future, we are discovering new ways to bring people back to research and advocate for research returners.
