Enabling talented professionals to return to a research technical career after a break
NPL and the Daphne Jackson Trust launch a new Research Technical Professional Fellowship, supporting professionals to overcome the barriers of a career break.
For the last 30+ years, the Daphne Jackson Trust has been facilitating the return to research for nearly 500 researchers who have taken a career break. Now, they have developed a new type of fellowship to support Research Technical Professionals who have had to take a career break for family, caring or health reasons. They are working with NPL who is funding and hosting the first of these fellowships at its centre in Teddington.
Each fellowship, whether it is full or part time, is funded for up to two years with additional funding for training and conference attendance. The focus is to retrain in specific advanced research and engineering techniques and can be in any research area.

Professor JT Janssen, Chief Scientist, NPL:
Science and engineering thrives when we have diverse workforces with varying experiences and perspectives. This is a great opportunity to support those who may be facing barriers back into work and bring their specialist skills back into the sector.”
Dr Katie Perry, Chief Executive at the Daphne Jackson Trust:
At the Daphne Jackson Trust we are absolutely thrilled that NPL are the first organisation to host and fund our Research Technical Professional Fellowships! Together, we believe in the vital need to support those individuals who bring indispensable skills to research projects. NPL have shown how much they support the need for inclusivity and diversity in this area. We can’t wait to fill the first RTP Fellowship opportunity at NPL!”.
