Trust’s Chair of Board is one of the UK’s leading scientists

12 February 2014 | News news

We are delighted that Professor Dame Glynis Breakwell, Chair of the Daphne Jackson Trust’s Board of Trustees has been named by the Science Council as one of the UK’s 100 leading practicing scientists.

Professor Breakwell, DBE DL, is Vice-Chancellor at the University of Bath and is recognised by the Science Council for her leadership in UK higher education and championing the role of universities in scientific and technological innovation, exploitation and economic regeneration. She is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society, a Chartered Psychologist, a Chartered Health Psychologist and an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences.

Dame Glynis became Chair of the Daphne Jackson Trust’s Board of Trustees in 2009 and since then has helped shape it into the forward looking organisation it is today.

Thirty-five women appear in the top 100 list, which groups scientists into 10 ‘types’, including ‘teacher’, ‘innovator’ and ‘explorer’ scientists. Professor Athene Donald, a Patron of the Daphne Jackson Trust, also appears on the list and is recognised as one of the UK’s top ‘communicator scientists’.

After seeing the list David Willetts, Minister for Universities and Science said: “This list helpfully challenges the perception that there is only one kind of scientist and highlights the different types of skills and challenges a career in science involves. If we want more people to enter a career in science we need to show that the scientific community is not some exclusive club but people with a wide variety of vocations and interests who have rewarding careers and are making a significant contribution to the wealth and well-being of the UK.”
